Maris Adamovics, Ritchey’s product development manager: “Some manufacturers wrap alloy parts with a carbon veneer for cosmetic purposes, which can actually create highstress areas or weak spots where the materials are joined, increasing the risk of component failure. But we’ve fully merged two differing materials in a way that allows us to exploit the characteristics of both. “Yes, our stem does benefit from what is now a very popular carbon finish, and many people are referring to it as a carbon stem. But carbon is only part of the story. At significantly less weight than many carbon models, our Matrix carbonalloy stem is tougher than carbon, and resists fatigue better than alloy. The rigidity and elasticity characteristics of the two materials differ greatly, requiring a sophisticated manufacturing process to fuse them together. And as with all Ritchey components, our Matrix stem had to undergo thousands of hours of testing and pass every conceivable quality test before we’d let it go to market.
